A shocking act of violence occurred on a New York City subway train just days before Christmas. A man allegedly set a sleeping woman on fire, then calmly watched as she burned to death. The incident took place around 7:30 am on Sunday on a Coney Island-bound F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
Horrifying video footage shows the suspect observing the woman engulfed in flames. A transit officer is seen walking past the open train door, briefly pausing and seemingly using his radio before continuing down the platform. The suspect, described as a man between 25 and 30 years old, around 5’6″ (168cm) tall, and weighing approximately 150 pounds (68kg), then appears to walk away. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, jeans, brown boots, and a dark knit hat with a red band. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Investigators believe the woman was asleep when the suspect, who was sitting across from her, approached and set her on fire. Police and paramedics responded to the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Liquor bottles were found near her, but their connection to the incident is still under investigation.
The horrific scene unfolded in front of shocked commuters, who witnessed the woman’s body being removed from the station. An MTA worker described the victim’s clothes as “burnt off.” The incident has heightened concerns about safety on the New York City subway system.
This attack comes as Governor Kathy Hochul has increased the National Guard presence in the subway system to 1,000 troops as part of a $160 million effort to improve safety during the holiday season. While the governor claims a 10% decrease in overall transit crime, subway murders have risen by at least 60% this year, with eight people killed on subway trains or in stations as of early September.
This was not the only violent incident on the transit system that weekend. Earlier, an argument on a 7 train in Queens resulted in a fatal stabbing, and a D train was taken out of service after a passenger assaulted a conductor.
