A 55-year-old Texas man faces stalking charges after allegedly sending threatening and sexually explicit messages to WNBA player Caitlin Clark through social media. Michael Lewis was arrested Sunday at an Indianapolis hotel, where Clark’s team Indiana Fever is based.
Police identified multiple concerning messages sent to Clark from Lewis’s account on X. According to court documents, the messages were sent between December 16 and January 2. One message stated: “@CaitlinClark22 been driving around your house 3x a day..but don’t call the law just yet, the publc is allowed to drive by gainbridge..aka Caitlin’s Fieldhouse.” Another message indicated plans to attend games: “I’m getting tickets. I’m sitting behind the bench.”
Clark, the 2024 WNBA rookie of the year, reported these messages to authorities expressing fear for her safety. ESPN reported that the 22-year-old athlete notified police before Lewis arrived in Indianapolis and had begun altering her appearance in public due to safety concerns.
Prosecutors stated in court documents that the social media posts “caused Caitlin Clark to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, or threatened.” The FBI located Lewis by tracking the IP addresses of the messages to a downtown Indianapolis hotel, according to Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears.
When questioned, Lewis characterized his messages as “an imagination, fantasy type thing and it’s a joke, and it’s nothing to do with threatening,” court documents reveal. He is scheduled for a Tuesday court appearance and could face up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
Mears addressed the case in a Monday press release, stating “it takes a lot of courage for women to come forward in these cases, which is why many don’t.” He added that “in doing so, the victim is setting an example for all women who deserve to live and work in Indy without the threat of sexual violence.”
This incident follows the recent arrest of a man in Oregon who was charged with stalking and harassing women’s college basketball star Paige Bueckers.
