High-level delegations from the United States and China are meeting in London to preserve a fragile tariffs agreement and prevent an escalating trade war that has already disrupted global markets and raised recession concerns.

Monday’s meeting follows last month’s Geneva negotiations that provided temporary relief in the trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies. The agreement suspended most 100 percent-plus tariffs imposed by both sides for 90 days, though tensions have continued with ongoing criticism from both nations.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet with a Chinese delegation headed by Vice Premier He Lifeng at an undisclosed London location.

President Donald Trump, who announced the talks Friday after speaking with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, expressed optimism on social media, stating “The meeting should go very well.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced this sentiment Sunday, saying “We want China and the United States to continue moving forward with the agreement that was struck in Geneva.”

While UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government confirmed it is not participating in the London talks, a spokesperson noted that “A trade war is in nobody’s interests, so we welcome these talks.”

The meeting occurs days after Trump and Xi’s first publicly acknowledged phone conversation since Trump returned to the White House in January. Trump characterized Thursday’s call as reaching a “very positive conclusion,” despite previously accusing China of violating the Geneva agreement and describing Xi as “hard to make a deal with.”

Xi, according to state news agency Xinhua, emphasized that “correcting the course of the big ship of Sino-US relations requires us to steer well and set the direction.”

The trade war’s economic impact remains significant, with Monday’s customs data showing Chinese exports to the US dropped 34.5 percent year-on-year in May, marking the steepest decline since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Despite ongoing tensions, Asian stock markets, including China’s, gained ground Monday ahead of the new negotiation round, suggesting investor cautious optimism about potential progress in resolving the trade dispute.

Shenghua Wen, 42, of Ontario, California, admitted to conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government, the Justice Department announced Monday. According to prosecutors, Wen shipped at least three containers of firearms destined for North Korea in 2023. One container successfully reached Nampo, North Korea, via Hong Kong. To execute the operation, Wen purchased a firearms business in Houston, Texas, and used fraudulent paperwork to conceal the actual contents of his shipping containers, […]

Canada Announces Historic Military Spending Surge To Break Free From US Dependence

Canada has announced plans to significantly expand its military capabilities and reduce defense dependency on the United States through a comprehensive security investment strategy. Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the new security investment plan Monday, proposing over $9 billion in additional military funding this fiscal year. The investment would enable Canada to meet NATO's 2% defense spending target five years earlier than previously planned. "I call on all parties in Parliament to support these critical investments in our security and sovereignty. Our plan will help ensure that Canada is strong at home and reliable abroad," Carney stated. "We should no longer send three-quarters of our defense capital spending to America. We will invest in new submarines, aircraft, ships, armed vehicles and artillery, as well as new radar drones and sensors to monitor the sea floor and the Arctic." The investments […]

Thunder Star Drops 34 Points After Learning Hard Lesson From Blown Lead

Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a dominant performance in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, helping his team bounce back with a 123-107 victory over the Indiana Pacers to tie the series 1-1. "You can't just throw the first punch," Gilgeous-Alexander said after Sunday night's game. "You've got to throw all the punches all night." The statement reflected lessons learned from Game 1, when Oklahoma City surrendered a 15-point fourth-quarter lead before losing 111-110 on a last-second basket by Indiana. Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 34 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals while shooting an impressive 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault highlighted multiple areas of improvement from their opening loss. Oklahoma City capitalized better on Indiana's turnovers, received stronger contributions from Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, nearly doubled their assist total after recording […]

Trump Deploys National Guard As New Travel Ban Sparks Mass Protests

President Donald Trump's executive order restricting entry for citizens from 12 countries has taken effect, coinciding with escalating tensions over immigration enforcement policies across the United States. The measure, which Trump announced last week citing national security concerns, became active on Monday. The order resurrects similar policies from Trump's first presidency, when travelers from predominantly Muslim countries faced entry restrictions. Many affected nations currently experience ongoing conflicts and large-scale population displacement. Initial reports from Los Angeles International Airport indicated no immediate visible disruptions in the hours following the ban's implementation, according to the Associated Press. The restrictions apply to citizens of Afghanistan, Chad, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, the Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Sudan […]

Four Palestinians Shot Dead While Seeking Food Aid in Gaza

At least four Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire while approaching an aid distribution center, according to Gaza health workers. The military said it was aware of injury reports but noted "the number does not align with the information currently held by the IDF." This marks another deadly incident near aid distribution points operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a new organization backed by Israel and the US. The latest shooting occurred before dawn near an aid distribution site close to Rafah in southern Gaza. Palestinian paramedics reported evacuating four fatalities as crowds gathered, hoping the aid center would open for food distribution. One woman described her husband being shot in the head while […]
