President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin over the ongoing Ukraine conflict and indicated he may impose additional sanctions on Russia.
“We get a lot of b******t thrown at us by Putin,” Trump stated during a White House cabinet meeting Tuesday. “He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”
Trump noted that Putin is “killing a lot of people,” including both Russian soldiers and Ukrainian forces. When questioned about Senate-proposed legislation for further Russian sanctions, Trump responded: “I’m looking at it very strongly.”
However, Trump declined to elaborate on his plans regarding Putin, telling reporters: “I wouldn’t be telling you. Don’t we want to have a little surprise?” He then shifted the discussion to last month’s US strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
These remarks coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron’s address to the British Parliament, where he declared that Europe will “never abandon Ukraine.” Macron emphasized that the UK and France would collaborate with a “coalition of the willing” to support Ukraine.
“We will fight till the very last minute to get the ceasefire, to start the negotiations to build this robust and sustainable peace because this is our security and our principles together, which are at stake in Ukraine,” Macron said.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump announced his administration would send additional weapons to Ukraine, describing the new shipments as primarily “defensive weapons.” US media reports indicated Washington had paused certain missile and munition transfers to Ukraine due to depleted weapons stockpiles, with the Pentagon conducting a “capability review” of US weapons.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to end the Ukraine war quickly. However, his diplomatic efforts, including multiple phone calls with Putin, have not stopped the violence.
Ukrainian and Russian officials held direct talks in Turkey in May, agreeing to a prisoner swap, but neither side has achieved a temporary truce or lasting ceasefire.
On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow awaits Ukraine’s proposal for possible negotiation dates. “As soon as dates are agreed โ and we hope that it will be done โ we will make an announcement,” he stated.
Russia has intensified long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities recently and has been gradually advancing along several Ukrainian front-line sections in recent months. On Monday, Russia announced capturing the Ukrainian village of Dachne in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
