Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed American demands to stop uranium enrichment as ongoing negotiations between the two nations remain uncertain.
“Saying things like ‘We will not allow Iran to enrich uranium’ is nonsense. No one [in Iran] is waiting for others’ permission,” Khamenei stated in a speech reported by the country’s semi-official Mehr News Agency on Tuesday. He expressed doubt about whether the talks would “bring results.”
Since mid-April, Washington and Tehran have engaged in four rounds of Omani-mediated discussions aimed at restricting Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, continuing disputes have cast doubt on the next negotiation round, which Reuters reported was scheduled for Rome this weekend.
During his previous term, US President Donald Trump abandoned the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that Iran had signed with world powers. Since returning to office in January, Trump has sought to create a new agreement while reviving his “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran. Last week, he warned that talks needed to “move quickly or something bad is going to happen.”
Tehran confirmed Tuesday that it has received and is reviewing a US proposal. However, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi stated earlier that negotiations would fail if Washington insisted on Iran stopping domestic uranium enrichment, which the US considers a potential pathway to nuclear weapons development.
Iran currently enriches uranium to 60 percentโfar exceeding the 3.67-percent limit established in the 2015 agreement but below the 90 percent required for nuclear weapons. Iranian officials have consistently maintained that their program serves peaceful purposes and is “non-negotiable.”
US negotiator Steve Witkoff has described the continuation of Iran’s enrichment program as a “red line.” On Sunday, he emphasized that the US “cannot allow even 1 percent of an enrichment capability.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested on Sunday that an agreement ensuring Iran would not develop nuclear weapons was “within reach.” Nevertheless, he stressed that Iran would continue enriching uranium “with or without a deal.”
