South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has vigorously defended his controversial martial law declaration, claiming it was necessary to protect democracy from what he calls a “parliamentary dictatorship.”
In a televised address, Yoon stated he would “stand firm whether impeached or investigated,” despite facing significant political challenges. The opposition-led parliament has already impeached two key officials – the police chief and justice minister – and is preparing for a second impeachment vote against Yoon.
The political crisis intensified after Yoon’s initial martial law order, which he quickly withdrew after lawmakers blocked it. Since then, the country has experienced significant turmoil, including massive protests and strikes demanding his removal.
Yoon’s ruling People Power Party is now divided, with party leader Han Dong-hoon urging members to vote to remove the president. If impeached, Yoon would face a constitutional court trial, requiring a two-thirds majority to be permanently removed from office.
The president continues to deny accusations of insurrection, instead claiming that North Korea sympathizers are attempting to undermine his government. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and several of his allies have been banned from leaving South Korea.
In a dramatic side note, former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who resigned over the martial law incident, attempted suicide while in detention but is now in stable condition.
