“Our plane crashed. It’s upside down.” These were John Nelson’s words after his Delta Air Lines flight flipped while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Remarkably, all 80 people aboard the Minneapolis flight survived, according to the airport CEO. Eighteen passengers were injured, with three suffering serious injuries – a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s – though none were reported as critical.
“Most people appear to be okay. We’re all getting off,” Nelson said in a Facebook video posted shortly after the crash. He later told CNN there was no warning before landing: “We skidded on our side, then flipped over on our back,” noting “a big fire ball out the left side of the plane.”
Passengers found themselves suspended upside down in their seats. “We were upside down hanging like bats,” recounted fellow passenger Peter Koukov. Nelson explained he managed to unbuckle himself and reach the ground, while “some people were kind of hanging and needed some help… and others were able to get down on their own.”
Social media footage captured people escaping the overturned aircraft as fire crews applied foam. Some passengers received assistance from airport staff before running from the plane.
Strangely, Diane Perry, at the airport for another flight, only learned about the crash from family members calling her while she stood in the check-in line. “It was kind of ironic that we were in the airport and didn’t know that there was a crash outside,” she told the BBC.
The crash’s cause remains under investigation. Two runways will stay closed for several days, with passengers warned to expect delays.
Still processing the event, Nelson told CNN he remained “stressed, nervous, shaky,” adding: “It’s amazing that we’re still here.”
