Neuralink Receives Approval for First Clinical Trial in Canada

Article arrow_drop_down

Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company, Neuralink, has been granted approval by Health Canada to conduct its first clinical trial in the country. The trial will focus on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a brain implant designed to help paralyzed individuals control digital devices with their thoughts.

The implant aims to assist individuals with quadriplegia, or paralysis of all four limbs, by allowing them to control external devices such as computers and smartphones simply by thinking. This technology has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for people with severe disabilities.

Neuralink has already conducted successful trials in the United States, where two patients have received the implant. Both patients have demonstrated the ability to use the device to perform various tasks, including playing video games, browsing the internet, and engaging in creative activities like 3D design.

The company is now expanding its trials to Canada, with plans to enroll more participants in the coming months. Neuralink’s long-term goal is to develop brain-computer interface technology that can not only restore movement and communication but also address other neurological conditions, such as vision impairment.

The approval from Health Canada marks a significant step forward for Neuralink and its mission to advance brain-computer interface technology. The trial’s findings will contribute to the development and refinement of this groundbreaking technology, offering hope for improved treatment options for individuals with paralysis and other neurological disabilities.

Buava Singh, a resident of the Poonch district on the Indian side, recounted a devastating scene. A mortar shell, he says, ripped through his niece Ruby Kaur's home in the dead of night. She had simply woken to prepare tea for her ailing husband when tragedy struck. The shrapnel, Singh described, caused fatal head wounds. Ruby Kaur is now dead, and her daughter gravely injured. UFC Legend Mark Kerr’s Dramatic Life Story Comes to Screen with Dwayne Johnson in Lead Role

UFC pioneer Mark Kerr's tumultuous journey through the early days of mixed martial arts is set to captivate audiences in the upcoming biopic "The Smashing Machine," featuring a transformed Dwayne Johnson in what many are calling his most dramatic role to date. Kerr, now 56, earned his intimidating nickname "The Smashing Machine" through his devastating fighting style during MMA's formative years, when fighters often competed multiple times in a single night. The Ohio native's remarkable career included four first-round stoppage wins at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997, with his longest bout lasting just 133 seconds. However, the film delves beyond Kerr's octagon dominance to explore his harrowing struggle with painkiller addiction, which culminated in a life-threatening overdose in 1999. The biopic draws inspiration from the acclaimed 2002 HBO documentary of the same name that chronicled Kerr's rise, fall, […]

SpaceX’s $3 Billion Starship Explodes Mid-Flight

SpaceX Starship Experiences In-Flight Breakup During Ninth Test Flight SpaceX conducted its ninth Starship demonstration flight on Tuesday evening from Starbase, the company's launch facility in southern Texas, where residents recently voted to incorporate as an official city. The 403-foot rocket successfully lifted off but did not achieve its primary mission objectives when the spacecraft lost control and broke apart during flight. Following two previous test flights that ended in explosions, SpaceX aimed to deploy mock satellites after liftoff. This objective was not completed due to a malfunction in the payload bay door that prevented it from fully opening. The spacecraft subsequently entered an uncontrolled spin while traveling toward a planned landing zone in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX confirmed the spacecraft experienced what the company terms "rapid unscheduled disassembly," meaning it broke apart in flight. "Teams will continue to review […]

Apple Claims Safari Use Drops First Time In 20 Years As ChatGPT Threatens Google Search

The growing influence of generative AI on traditional search engines was highlighted when Apple's senior vice president of services reported that Safari web browsing decreased for the first time in two decades, attributing this decline to users shifting to large language models (LLMs). Google contested these assertions, stating its search engine continues "to see overall query growth." However, emerging data suggests ChatGPT is making inroads in online shopping behavior. A survey by Datos revealed that between late October and mid-January, Amazon.com was the most frequently visited domain referred from ChatGPT's search function, accounting for 9.13% of all traffic. E-commerce domains collectively received 12.65% of traffic, falling behind news (21.42%) and academic (17.81%) domains. The rising trend of AI-assisted shopping is transforming marketing strategies. While traditional marketing has centered on search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to improve visibility in Google resultsโ€”focusing […]

Judge Rules Google Illegally Controls Online Ad Market As Tech Giant Faces Second Antitrust Defeat

A US judge has determined that Google maintains an illegal monopoly in online advertising technology, marking the tech giant's second antitrust loss within a year. The lawsuit, brought by the US Department of Justice and 17 states, successfully argued that Google illegally dominates the technology determining online ad placement. This ruling follows an earlier decision that found Google also held a monopoly in online search. Google has announced plans to appeal the decision. "Publishers have many options and they choose Google because our ad tech tools are simple, affordable and effective," stated Lee-Ann Mulholland, Google's head of regulatory affairs. In her ruling, US District Judge Leonie Brinkema declared Google had "wilfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts" allowing it to "acquire and maintain monopoly power" in the market. "This exclusionary conduct substantially harmed Google's publisher customers, the competitive process, […]

US Embassy Warns Americans About Zambia’s New Surveillance Powers

The US Embassy in Zambia has issued an alert to American citizens about a new cybersecurity law that requires surveillance of electronic communications in the country. The embassy warned Americans "in or planning to visit Zambia of a new law that requires the interception and surveillance of all electronic communications in the country," including calls, emails, texts and streamed content to check for "critical information," a term described as "so broadly defined that it could apply to almost any activity." Zambia's government defended the law as necessary to combat online fraud, child pornography, and disinformation. The foreign ministry responded that the Cyber Security Act is "not intended to invade any person's privacy" of either Zambians or foreigners, stating: "The Law does not authorize mass or random surveillance. Any interception or data request requires a court-issued warrant." The government clarified that […]
