Leicester City have dismissed manager Steve Cooper after a disappointing start to the Premier League season. The club announced Cooper’s departure on Sunday, just five months after he took charge following their promotion from the Championship.
Cooper leaves Leicester in 16th place in the Premier League table, just two points above the relegation zone. The Foxes have struggled for consistency, losing four of their last five matches in all competitions, including a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.
The club expressed their gratitude for Cooper’s contributions but stated that a change was necessary to improve their fortunes. Assistant manager Alan Tate and first-team coach Steve Rands have also left the club.
“Steve, Alan and Steve depart with our thanks for their contribution during their time with the club and with our best wishes for the future,” the club said in a statement.
Cooper’s brief tenure at Leicester was marked by inconsistency and a lack of positive results. He took over from Enzo Maresca, who guided the club to promotion but left to join Chelsea. Ironically, it was a defeat to Maresca’s Chelsea that proved to be Cooper’s final match in charge.
This dismissal marks Cooper’s second sacking from a Premier League club in less than a year. He was previously dismissed by Nottingham Forest in December 2023, despite leading them to promotion from the Championship.
Leicester will now begin the search for a new manager, with first-team coach Ben Dawson taking temporary charge of the team. The club aims to appoint a new manager as soon as possible as they look to climb away from the relegation zone.
Despite achieving promotion with Nottingham Forest, he was unable to replicate that success at Leicester, leading to his swift departure.
