A 27-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after shooting two Israeli visitors in Miami Beach, Florida. According to police, Mordechai Brafman told authorities he believed he was targeting Palestinians when he opened fire.
Brafman was booked into Miami-Dade County Corrections on Sunday facing two counts of attempted murder. The arrest report states that Brafman “spontaneously stated that while he was driving his truck, he saw two Palestinians and shot and killed both.”
Both victims, reported by local media to be a Jewish father and son visiting from Israel, survived the attack with non-fatal injuries. One sustained a shoulder wound while the other was hit in the forearm.
One victim, identified as Ari Revay, described the sudden attack in an interview with WPLG Local 10. Through translation provided by his cousin, Revay recounted: “‘Boom, boom, boom’ and he randomly started shooting… He put the window down, driver’s seat and just blasted.”
This incident occurs amid a documented rise in both anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic hate incidents since the Gaza war began on October 7, 2023. Several violent attacks targeting Palestinian Americans have occurred during this period.
Last October, six-year-old Palestinian Wadea al-Fayoume was fatally stabbed 26 times by his family’s landlord in suburban Chicago. Other incidents include an alleged attempted drowning of a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl in Texas and the shooting of three young Palestinian men near a Vermont university campus in November 2023.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ National Executive Director Nihad Awad condemned the incident, stating: “This is just the latest example of the hate targeting the Palestinian-American community in this country and Palestinians in their homeland. Policymakers in our nation should stop fomenting the anti-Palestinian hate that led to the genocide in Gaza and to hate crimes in America.”
