Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening.
The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port.
Hyland expressed concern about the port’s readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for “huge disaster” for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland’s imports and exports if further disruptions occur. The IRHA is calling for a clear timeline for the full reopening of the second berth and is demanding representation at upcoming meetings between the Irish, Welsh, and English governments regarding the ongoing situation. The IRHA represents the movement of 98% of all palletized goods entering and leaving Ireland, making their involvement crucial.
The reopening is expected to alleviate pressure on hauliers who have faced significant challenges navigating the closure during a peak period for transport. Irish Ferries has advised passengers that sailings will depart earlier than scheduled for the next few days. Stena Line is expected to operate its usual schedule of four daily sailings between Dublin and Holyhead.
The Irish Exporters Association (IEA) has welcomed the reopening, recognizing the port’s vital role in Irish trade with the UK and beyond. IEA CEO Simon McKeever stressed the importance of expediting the reopening of the second berth, as the current temporary arrangement remains vulnerable to weather and other unforeseen events. The IEA will continue to engage with governments and stakeholders on both sides of the Irish Sea until full port operations are restored.

UFC pioneer Mark Kerr's tumultuous journey through the early days of mixed martial arts is set to captivate audiences in the upcoming biopic "The Smashing Machine," featuring a transformed Dwayne Johnson in what many are calling his most dramatic role to date. Kerr, now 56, earned his intimidating nickname "The Smashing Machine" through his devastating fighting style during MMA's formative years, when fighters often competed multiple times in a single night. The Ohio native's remarkable career included four first-round stoppage wins at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997, with his longest bout lasting just 133 seconds. However, the film delves beyond Kerr's octagon dominance to explore his harrowing struggle with painkiller addiction, which culminated in a life-threatening overdose in 1999. Smithsonian Museum Quietly Removes Trump Impeachment Display Sparking Political Firestorm
The Smithsonian Institution has denied political influence in its decision to remove a display about President Donald Trump's impeachments from the National Museum of American History. The institution stated Saturday that it removed the "temporary" placard for failing to meet museum standards regarding "appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation." Officials explained the display was inconsistent with other exhibit sections and obstructed views of objects within its case. "We were not asked by any Administration or other government officials to remove content from the exhibit," the Smithsonian said in a statement. The institution, which operates 21 museums and the National Zoo, announced plans to update the impeachment section in coming weeks to "reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation's history." The Washington Post reported Thursday that the museum removed explicit references to Trump's impeachments last month, leaving the exhibit incorrectly stating […]
