Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret over his recent criticisms of President Donald Trump following their highly publicized dispute.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X early Wednesday. “They went too far.”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who recently stepped down from his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency, did not identify which specific criticisms prompted his apology.
Musk’s regret follows a series of aggressive attacks against Trump, including an unverified allegation that the administration withheld Jeffrey Epstein files to protect Trump from potential connections to the deceased financier and convicted sex offender.
The conflict erupted after Musk, previously one of Trump’s most influential supporters during his campaign and early presidency, publicly opposed Trump’s comprehensive legislative package last week. Musk condemned what he called the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” as a “disgusting abomination,” criticizing the proposed combination of tax cuts and spending increases.
Following this initial disagreement, Musk launched multiple attacks on Trump and Republican spending proposals, creating a public confrontation between two prominent figures. Despite having invested hundreds of millions supporting Trump’s presidential campaign, Musk claimed Trump’s election victory depended on his support and even suggested backing impeachment efforts.
Musk’s most serious accusation involved claiming Trump appeared “in” the Epstein files, suggesting this explained why the documents remained unreleased. The White House characterized this claim as an “unfortunate episode.”
Trump responded by suggesting the simplest spending reduction would involve canceling government contracts and subsidies to Musk’s businesses, including Tesla and SpaceX. In a Saturday NBC News interview, Trump indicated their relationship had ended and expressed no interest in reconciliation.
“I have no intention of speaking to him,” Trump stated.
Trump also warned Musk would face “very serious consequences” if he supported primary challenges against Republicans backing his pending congressional legislation.
However, Trump’s tone appeared to moderate by Monday, when he told reporters they had maintained a “great relationship” and expressed goodwill toward Musk.
Prior to his public apology, Musk had taken steps suggesting an attempt to reduce tensions. The entrepreneur deleted several X posts criticizing Trump, including his Epstein-related allegations, and shared multiple posts from Trump defending immigration policies and condemning recent Los Angeles unrest.
The dispute represents a dramatic shift in the relationship between two influential figures who had previously maintained a close alliance throughout Trump’s political resurgence.
