Eight Palestinians were killed and 35 injured during a major Israeli military operation in Jenin, West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The operation, named “Iron Wall,” involved air strikes, troops, drones, helicopters, and armored bulldozers entering the city and its refugee camp.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu described it as an “extensive and significant” operation to “defeat terrorism” in Jenin, which Israel considers a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups. Jenin’s hospital director reported that three doctors and two nurses were among those wounded by Israeli gunfire. Separately, masked Israeli extremists attacked Palestinians in two villages near Qalqilya, resulting in 21 Palestinian injuries and two Israeli casualties. The attacks coincided with President Trump’s announcement lifting sanctions on Israeli settlers accused of West Bank attacks, reversing Biden-era policies.
The policy shift drew contrasting reactions. Finance Minister Smotrich praised Trump’s “unwavering support,” while Palestinian officials warned it would encourage more settler violence. Local mayor Luay Tayyam viewed it as “a green light for settlers.”
Settlement activity has intensified, with Peace Now reporting 59 new unauthorized outposts in 2024, more than double the previous year’s record. The West Bank currently houses about 700,000 Jewish settlers in 160 settlements, which are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this position.
