Australian Teenagers Critically Ill After Consuming Methanol-Laced Cocktails in Thailand
Two Australian teenagers are fighting for their lives in Thailand after allegedly consuming cocktails contaminated with methanol. The 19-year-old women, recent high school graduates from Melbourne, were on a backpacking trip through Southeast Asia when they fell ill after drinking the cocktails at a hostel in Udon Thani. One of the women has been airlifted to a hospital in Bangkok, where her family has joined her. Her father described her condition as "grave," highlighting the severity of methanol poisoning. Methanol, a toxic alcohol often used as a cheaper substitute for ethanol in alcoholic beverages, can cause severe health complications and even death. Symptoms of methanol poisoning include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, blindness, and seizures.
