Bird Flu Detected in Raw Milk Sold in California, Prompting Recall and Health Warning

Article arrow_drop_down

California health officials have issued a warning against consuming a batch of raw milk sold in the state after it tested positive for bird flu. The contaminated milk, produced by Raw Farm LLC of Fresno County, was recalled due to the potential health risks associated with the virus.

The recall affects quart and half-gallon sizes of Raw Farm’s raw milk with the lot ID of 20241109 and a best-by date of November 27th. Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume it and to discard it immediately.

The contamination was discovered during routine testing of raw milk products by the Santa Clara County Public Health Laboratory. Further testing by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory confirmed the presence of the H5 bird flu virus in the milk.

While no illnesses have been linked to the contaminated milk, health officials are urging caution due to the ongoing spread of bird flu in various animal populations and sporadic human cases. Pasteurized milk remains safe to drink.

Raw Farm LLC has stated that it is following standard safety procedures to monitor its cows for illness and that the recalled milk should no longer be available in stores. The company maintains that its own tests and those conducted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) have been negative for bird flu.

Raw milk, which is not pasteurized, can carry disease-causing pathogens and poses a higher risk of illness compared to pasteurized milk. Health officials have long cautioned against consuming raw milk due to the potential for serious health complications.

The recent bird flu outbreak in the US has renewed interest in raw milk, with some proponents believing it to be a healthier option. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 55 human cases of bird flu in 2024, mostly linked to farm workers in contact with infected animals. Last week, the first case in a child was identified in California, prompting further investigation into the source of exposure.

Bird flu symptoms in humans include typical flu-like symptoms such as eye redness, sore throat, cough, and fever. Anyone who has consumed the recalled raw milk and experiences these symptoms is advised to contact their healthcare provider or local health department immediately.

Kerr, now 56, earned his intimidating nickname "The Smashing Machine" through his devastating fighting style during MMA's formative years, when fighters often competed multiple times in a single night. The Ohio native's remarkable career included four first-round stoppage wins at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997, with his longest bout lasting just 133 seconds. However, the film delves beyond Kerr's octagon dominance to explore his harrowing struggle with painkiller addiction, which culminated in a life-threatening overdose in 1999. The biopic draws inspiration from the acclaimed 2002 HBO documentary of the same name that chronicled Kerr's rise, fall, […]

Teen Undergoes Rare Surgery To Remove “Parasitic Twin” Growing From His Stomach

Doctors in Delhi have successfully performed a remarkable surgery on a 17-year-old boy to remove a "parasitic" twin attached to his abdomen. Parasitic twins are extremely uncommon developmental anomalies where an underdeveloped conjoined twin relies completely on the host twin for survival, occurring in fewer than one per 100,000 births. The teenager had fully formed extra limbs, a pelvis, and external genitaliaโ€”weighing nearly 15kgโ€”protruding from his abdomen. The parasitic structure was sustained by a chest artery and remarkably could sense pain, touch, and temperature changes. Dr. Asuri Krishna, who led the surgical team at Aiims hospital, described the case as particularly challenging due to the patient's age. "Only 40-50 cases of parasitic twins have been documented in world medical literature and, in those cases, the surgery had been attempted on children," he told the BBC. With limited medical precedent, the […]

The program targets screening 100 million people at over 20,000 health facilities this year. Services include mental health evaluations for depression and anxiety. However, the original 4 trillion rupiah budget was reduced by 1 trillion rupiah under President Prabowo Subianto's direction to […]

Proposed Federal Rule Could Dramatically Reduce Nicotine in Cigarettes

The Biden administration is preparing to propose new regulations limiting nicotine levels in cigarettes, expected to be announced as early as Monday. This initiative comes after the administration's previous commitment to ban menthol cigarettes remained unfulfilled. The proposed regulation would focus specifically on traditional cigarettes, excluding other tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapies. While specific nicotine reduction targets haven't been disclosed, research indicates levels may need to be reduced by approximately 95% to minimize addiction potential. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify cigarette smoking as the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in over 480,000 deaths annually. Research from a 2018 FDA study projects that implementing a nicotine cap could prevent 16 million people from developing smoking addiction by 2060, potentially reaching 33.1 million by 2100. The initiative's origins trace back […]
