President Donald Trump has clarified his position regarding potential meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, denying reports that he is actively seeking a summit while leaving open the possibility of visiting China.
“The Fake News is reporting that I am SEEKING a ‘Summit’ with President Xi of China. This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday.
“I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump’s statement followed a Reuters report from last week indicating that aides to both leaders have discussed the possibility of a summit during a planned presidential trip to Asia later this year. According to unnamed sources familiar with the discussions, Trump and Xi could potentially meet during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled for South Korea from October 30 to November 1.
The two leaders have not met face-to-face since their 2019 encounter at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.
Currently, the United States and China are engaged in ongoing negotiations designed to reduce trade tensions that have escalated since Trump implemented his fluctuating tariff policies on Chinese exports.
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng convened in Stockholm, Sweden, beginning two days of discussions aimed at securing a trade agreement before the conclusion of a 90-day tariff truce set to expire on August 12.
In a Bloomberg Television interview last week, Bessent indicated that the administration was in “a very good place with China now” and suggested the August deadline could potentially be extended in “90-day increment” periods.
The diplomatic developments occur against the backdrop of complex US-China relations, with both nations working to establish frameworks for economic cooperation while managing broader geopolitical concerns. The potential for high-level meetings remains contingent on mutual agreement and the progression of current trade negotiations.
