At least 19 people have died and 164 were injured when a Bangladeshi air force training jet crashed into a school campus in Dhaka.
The incident occurred at Milestone School and College in the northern suburb of Uttara, where footage shows a massive fire and thick smoke after the aircraft struck a two-storey building.
The armed forces reported that the F-7 jet experienced a mechanical fault shortly after taking off for a training exercise at 13:00 local time. The pilot was among the fatalities, according to the air force statement posted on Facebook.
Over 50 people, including children and adults, were hospitalized with burns, a doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery confirmed. The school serves students aged four to 18 years old.
Rezaul Islam, a college teacher, told BBC Bangla he witnessed the plane hit the building “directly.” Fellow teacher Masud Tarik told Reuters he heard an explosion, saying, “When I looked back, I only saw fire and smoke… There were many guardians and kids here.”
A student described seeing the plane strike the building “right in front of my eyes.”
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam had attempted to steer the aircraft toward a less populated area after the mechanical failure occurred, the armed forces stated. He had just departed from an air force base in the capital.
Emergency teams continue rescue operations at the scene while the injured receive treatment at nearby hospitals. An investigation committee has been established to examine the incident.
Images from the crash site show numerous emergency workers searching through charred debris for survivors, observed by large crowds gathered on surrounding buildings.
Muhammad Yunus, leader of Bangladesh’s interim government, pledged that “necessary measures” would be taken to investigate the cause and “ensure all kinds of assistance.”
“This is a moment of deep sorrow for the nation. I wish the injured a speedy recovery and instruct all authorities, including the hospitals concerned, to deal with the situation with utmost importance,” Yunus posted on X.
Bangladesh has declared Tuesday a day of mourning, with the national flag to be flown at half-mast nationwide.
