Saudi Arabia Stuns Manchester City With Historic Club World Cup Victory

Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal delivered the biggest upset of the Club World Cup tournament, defeating Manchester City 4-3 in extra time to advance to the quarterfinals.

The match concluded 2-2 after regulation time on Monday, with Marcos Leonardo scoring the decisive goal in extra time to secure what many consider one of the greatest victories in Middle Eastern football history.

Al Hilal will now face Brazilian club Fluminense in the quarterfinals, guaranteeing a non-European team reaches the semifinals.

Manchester City opened the scoring in the ninth minute through Bernardo Silva, who converted from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross. Al Hilal protested that Ait-Nouri had used his arm in the buildup, but the goal was allowed to stand.

City created numerous opportunities to extend their advantage before halftime, but poor finishing and outstanding goalkeeping from Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou maintained the narrow lead. Bounou made several crucial saves, including stopping efforts from Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva.

Al Hilal equalized within a minute of the second half restart. Former City defender Joao Cancelo’s cross was parried by Ederson, with Malcolm’s follow-up blocked by Ruben Dias before Marcos Leonardo headed in the rebound.

Six minutes later, Al Hilal took the lead when Cancelo’s long ball found Malcolm, who used his pace and power to break through City’s high defensive line before calmly finishing past Ederson.

The Saudi supporters erupted while City manager Pep Guardiola immediately made three substitutions, bringing on Rodri, Nathan Ake, and Manuel Akanji to stabilize his team’s defense.

City found their equalizer when Al Hilal failed to clear a Bernardo corner, allowing Erling Haaland to score from close range to make it 2-2.

Despite sustained pressure from City, Bounou continued his heroics, denying Akanji and Ruben Dias. When Haaland did beat the goalkeeper, substitute Ali Lajami produced a spectacular goal-line clearance.

Guardiola substituted Haaland for Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush as the match entered extra time.

Al Hilal regained their lead four minutes into extra time through Kalidou Koulibaly, who met a Ruben Neves corner with a perfectly angled header.

City responded with a quality equalizer when Phil Foden expertly converted Rayan Cherki’s floating cross from the tightest of angles at the back post.

However, Al Hilal struck again for the winner. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header was saved by Ederson, but Marcos Leonardo was there to bundle the ball over the line.

After the match, an emotional Leonardo revealed personal motivation behind his performance: “I’ve had a difficult time in the last two months. My mother spent 70 days in the ICU. Today, she’s fine, thank God. When I scored those two goals, I thought of her. She was able to watch the match.”

City captain Bernardo Silva acknowledged his team’s failure to control Al Hilal’s counter-attacks: “We scored three and could’ve scored five, six. It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don’t let them run, and they ran way too many times. With one, two passes, there was always a feeling of danger coming from them. When we allow teams to run like this, we always suffer a lot, and today was the case.”

Musk Declares War On Trump Over Spending Bill And Threatens New Political Party

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has intensified his opposition to President Donald Trump's tax cuts and spending legislation while calling for the creation of a new political party. Musk's criticism targets Trump's 940-page "Big, Beautiful Bill," which includes tax breaks alongside significant reductions to healthcare and food programs. The legislation has drawn opposition from Democrats and some Republicans. In early June, Musk, who served as a major Trump campaign donor and former key adviser, labeled the bill a "disgusting abomination," triggering a public dispute with the president. The two appeared to reconcile temporarily, with Trump expressing goodwill toward Musk and the billionaire posting on X that he regretted going "too far." However, as senators prepared to vote on bill amendments Monday, Musk renewed his attacks. He declared that lawmakers who campaigned on spending cuts but supported the bill "should hang their […]

Iran Refuses Trump Nuclear Talks Until US Promises No More Attacks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed the possibility of immediate nuclear negotiations with the United States, despite President Trump's suggestion that talks could begin within days. Speaking on CBS Evening News Monday, Araghchi responded to Trump's timeline while G7 foreign ministers simultaneously issued statements supporting renewed dialogue on Iran's nuclear program. Iran and the US were previously engaged in nuclear discussions when Israel conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities. The US subsequently participated in attacks on Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites on June 21. While Tehran maintains its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes, both the US and Israel express concerns about potential weapons development capabilities. Araghchi indicated negotiations would require more time than Trump suggested, emphasizing Iran's need for security guarantees before reengaging. "In order for us to decide to reengage, we would have to […]

Senate Battles Through Night Over Trump’s Massive Spending Bill That Could Strip 12 Million of Healthcare

The US Senate has conducted a marathon overnight voting session on a comprehensive budget bill central to President Trump's legislative priorities. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, spanning nearly 1,000 pages, proposes increased spending for border security, defense, and energy production, balanced by reductions to healthcare and food-support programs. The legislation's future remains uncertain as Republicans, controlling both congressional chambers, are divided over the extent of welfare program cuts needed to fund tax break extensions. Following Senate approval, the bill would return to the House of Representatives for final passage before reaching Trump's desk. Senators have engaged in a "vote-a-rama" process since Monday night into Tuesday, debating and voting on individual amendments. The session has exceeded 22 hours. Vice President JD Vance arrived at Capitol Hill after 06:00 EST, suggesting Senate Republicans may require his tie-breaking vote. Republicans can afford […]

Trump Aid Cuts Could Kill 14 Million People By 2030 Says New Study

Research published in The Lancet medical journal suggests that President Donald Trump's cuts to US foreign humanitarian aid funding could result in more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030. One-third of those projected deaths would be children, according to the study. The research indicates that low- and middle-income countries face disruption "comparable in scale to a global pandemic or a major armed conflict," said co-author Davide Rasella from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in March that over 80% of all US Agency for International Development (USAID) programmes had been cancelled. The Trump administration has characterized these cuts as eliminating wasteful spending. The reductions were overseen by Elon Musk, who was leading an initiative to reduce federal workforce size at the time. Trump has consistently stated his intention to align overseas spending […]

Major Charities Demand Shutdown of Gaza Aid System After 500 Deaths

Over 130 international charities and NGOs are demanding the closure of the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which operates with Israeli and US backing. The organizations report that more than 500 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid since the GHF began operations in late May, following Israel's three-month Gaza blockade. Nearly 4,000 people have been injured during the same period. Major organizations including Oxfam, Save the Children, and Amnesty International claim Israeli forces and armed groups "routinely" fire on Palestinians seeking assistance. Israel denies its soldiers deliberately target aid recipients and defends the GHF system as providing direct assistance while bypassing Hamas interference. The joint statement from leading global charities alleges the foundation violates humanitarian work principles by forcing two million people into overcrowded, militarized zones where they face daily gunfire. Since GHF operations began, near-daily reports have emerged […]

England Manager Gareth Southgate Gets Knighthood

Former England manager Gareth Southgate will receive a knighthood at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, joining the ceremony among other honor recipients. The 54-year-old football manager earned recognition for his services to association football in the New Year Honours, following his leadership of England to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024, as well as the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. Southgate becomes the fourth England manager to receive a knighthood, joining Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey, and Sir Bobby Robson in this distinction. Sir Gareth stepped down from his position after eight years in charge, following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July. Thomas Tuchel subsequently took over the role. Following the December announcement, Southgate shared his response on social media, humorously noting that his family would be unlikely to address him as "Sir." He stated, "It has […]

Thunder Star Drops 34 Points After Learning Hard Lesson From Blown Lead

Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a dominant performance in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, helping his team bounce back with a 123-107 victory over the Indiana Pacers to tie the series 1-1. "You can't just throw the first punch," Gilgeous-Alexander said after Sunday night's game. "You've got to throw all the punches all night." The statement reflected lessons learned from Game 1, when Oklahoma City surrendered a 15-point fourth-quarter lead before losing 111-110 on a last-second basket by Indiana. Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 34 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals while shooting an impressive 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault highlighted multiple areas of improvement from their opening loss. Oklahoma City capitalized better on Indiana's turnovers, received stronger contributions from Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, nearly doubled their assist total after recording […]

Ronaldo Rejects FIFA World Cup Tournament Despite Multiple Offers

Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated he will almost certainly not participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, potentially disappointing FIFA President Gianni Infantino who hoped to feature one of football's most prominent figures at the tournament. The Portugal captain revealed on Saturday that he had received "quite a few" offers from participating clubs to join them for the tournament beginning June 14, but has decided against accepting any of these invitations. "Some things make sense to talk about, other things don't, and, as a person says, you can't take part in everything," Ronaldo explained. "You have to think about the short, medium and long term. It's a decision practically made on my part not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had quite a few invitations to go." Ronaldo made these comments in Munich, one day before Portugal's UEFA […]

Liverpool’s ยฃ170M Double Swoop: Former Boss Could Hold Key to Arsenal’s Triple Transfer Dream

Arsenal are reportedly exploring multiple transfer targets this summer, with Nico Williams remaining a priority following his standout performances for Spain at the European Championships last summer. The Athletic Club winger has attracted significant interest from top European clubs since the tournament. Arsenal previously pursued Williams last summer, but the Spanish international chose to remain at his boyhood club for another season. Recent reports suggest Arsenal have renewed contact with Williams, with sources indicating a potential deal may be more feasible this transfer window. However, with the club also targeting Martin Zubimendi and seeking a new striker, securing all three signings could prove financially challenging. Arsenal's striker search has focused on several candidates, with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres among the preferred options. However, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins has also emerged as a potential target, particularly given Villa's reported concerns […]

Liverpool Exploring Dual Move for Cherki and Wirtz Following Title Success

Following their Premier League title triumph, Liverpool are reportedly considering moves for both Lyon's Rayan Cherki and Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz during the summer transfer window. The Merseyside club are expected to have approximately ยฃ150 million available for transfers after securing the league title. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, suggested that Lyon's current financial difficulties could create an opportunity for Liverpool to pursue Cherki. Cherki, 21, has a ยฃ20 million release clause with one year remaining on his Lyon contract. The French club's reported financial troubles in Ligue 1 may necessitate player sales, potentially making negotiations more straightforward for interested parties. Manchester City are currently considered the frontrunners for Cherki's signature. However, reports indicate that Liverpool manager Arne Slot has met with the player personally in recent weeks, suggesting genuine interest from the […]

Haliburton Hits Clutch Shot With 0.3 Seconds Left To Steal Game 1

Tyrese Haliburton approached the final seconds with unwavering confidence, a mindset developed through multiple playoff performances. The Indiana Pacers guard delivered a 20-foot pull-up jumper with 0.3 seconds remaining Thursday, completing a dramatic comeback in a 111-110 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. This marked Haliburton's fourth crucial shot in closing seconds during the 2025 playoffs. The Pacers had not held a lead until his game-winning basket. "Ultimate confidence in himself," teammate Myles Turner observed. "Some players will say they have it, but there are other players that show it. He wants to be the one to hit that shot. He doesn't shy away from that moment." Haliburton's playoff clutch moments include a driving layup with 1.3 seconds left in overtime during Game 5 against Milwaukee, ending that first-round series. In the second […]
