A California physician charged with providing Friends star Matthew Perry with ketamine before his fatal overdose has agreed to enter a guilty plea.
Dr Salvador Plasencia will plead guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine, federal prosecutors announced Monday. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, with the plea expected to be entered in the coming weeks.
Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, was discovered dead in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home in October 2023. The 54-year-old actor had been open about his battles with depression and addiction, yet his death shocked fans worldwide.
Text messages between Dr Plasencia and Dr Mark Chavez, another physician who has already pleaded guilty in the case, reveal Dr Plasencia referring to Perry as a “moron” while speculating about how much the actor would pay for ketamine.
Court documents detail that Dr Plasencia administered ketamine to Perry at his residence and in the parking lot of the Long Beach Aquarium. The doctor also instructed Perry’s assistant, who is among the defendants, on how to inject the drug and sold additional vials for home storage.
Dr Plasencia is one of five individuals charged in what prosecutors describe as an underground network of dealers and medical professionals who supplied Perry with ketamine. While Perry was receiving legally prescribed ketamine for depression treatment, he sought quantities beyond his prescription.
The plea agreement specifies that between September 30, 2023, and October 12, 2023, Dr Plasencia sold Perry and his assistant twenty 5ml vials of ketamine (100mg/ml concentration), partial ketamine lozenges, and syringes.
Efforts to reach Dr Plasencia’s legal representatives for comment were unsuccessful.
