Tragic House Fire Claims Lives of Father and Nine-Year-Old Daughter in West Yorkshire

A devastating house fire in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, has resulted in the deaths of a father and his nine-year-old daughter, while an 11-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Russell Close, with emergency services receiving reports of the blaze at approximately 6 am. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed four crews to combat the fire.

Emergency responders attempted to save the father’s life at the scene, but he was pronounced dead. The nine-year-old girl was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries later that day. The 11-year-old girl was also hospitalized and continues to receive medical treatment.

The mother was reportedly outside the country when the tragedy occurred.

Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex of West Yorkshire Police stated that extensive investigations are underway in collaboration with the fire service. “We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident, which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives,” he said.

Authorities have been working to locate and support family members both domestically and internationally during this difficult time. Current investigations suggest no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire’s cause, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Local Councillor Ali Arshad, representing Heckmondwike on Kirklees Council, described the community as “close-knit” and praised residents for respecting the family’s privacy without speculation. He characterized the victims’ family as “absolutely amazing people” who were “always cheery and willing to help.”

The councillor confirmed that the mother had been on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and returned to the UK on Monday. “I think the key thing is to get the mother and daughter united. That’s going to be difficult,” he noted.

Councillor Viv Kendrick expressed her shock at the tragedy, emphasizing the tight-knit nature of the local community where “people all know each other.”

Darren O’Donovan, councillor for Dewsbury West and chairman of the fire authority, revealed that initial investigations suggest the fire may have originated in the kitchen area, potentially from a tumble dryer. However, he stressed that investigations remain ongoing.

“We believe that the fire started about an hour before the 999 call came in,” O’Donovan explained. “Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have started in the kitchen area, and its possible source could have been the tumble dryer, but that’s still under investigation.”

He highlighted that numerous tumble dryer models from various manufacturers have been subject to recalls due to safety concerns.

“That’s the tragedy: this was just a local family on a very regular street in Heckmondwike, and a tragic accident has taken place,” O’Donovan observed, noting the community’s supportive response to the affected family and friends.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service plans to maintain an increased presence in the neighborhood over the coming days to discuss fire prevention measures with residents.

In response to the incident, officials are encouraging residents to ensure they have functioning smoke alarms, establish nighttime routines that include switching off electrical equipment and closing internal doors, and verify whether their appliances appear on recall lists.

Specifically, residents should check recall notices for tumble dryers from brands including Hoover, Haier, Candy, Lamona, Capel, Baumatic, Montpellier, and Iberna.

A police presence remains at the scene as investigations continue.

ABC News Fires Veteran Journalist After Calling Trump World Class Hater

ABC News has terminated veteran journalist Terry Moran following his suspension over a social media post that labeled President Donald Trump and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller as "world-class haters." The network announced Tuesday that Moran's quickly deleted X post constituted "a clear violation of ABC News policies." ABC stated that while Moran's contract was already set to expire, the network decided against renewal "based on his recent post." The Sunday night post primarily targeted Miller, whom Moran characterized as "the brains behind Trumpism." Moran wrote that Miller "is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred" and called him "a world-class hater." He also applied the same description to Trump, though he suggested Trump's hatred served merely as "a means to an end" for "his own glorification." Regarding Miller specifically, Moran stated that "his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. […]

LA Police Make Mass Arrests As Curfew Imposed During Immigration Protest Crisis

Los Angeles police conducted mass arrests following the implementation of a curfew in downtown areas as protests continued against President Trump's immigration enforcement operations. The Los Angeles Police Department announced Tuesday evening that arrests were underway after groups gathered within the designated curfew zone. "Multiple groups continue to congregate on 1st St between Spring and Alameda," the LAPD posted on social media. "Those groups are being addressed and mass arrests are being initiated." While many protesters later dispersed, sporadic confrontations persisted. Officials justified the curfew as necessary to prevent vandalism and theft by those seeking to cause disruption. Mayor Karen Bass established the curfew covering one square mile of downtown Los Angeles, effective from 8pm Tuesday to 6am Wednesday. Bass indicated the measure would likely continue for several days but emphasized it applied only to a small section of the […]

US and China Reach Major Trade Breakthrough After Intense London Talks

The United States and China have established a "framework" on trade following two days of negotiations in London designed to reduce tensions between the world's largest economies. While details of the framework announced Tuesday remain unclear, the development represents progress following Washington and Beijing's announcement of a 90-day tariff pause after Geneva talks last month. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reported that both sides worked to implement the "Geneva consensus" and had "pounded through" all major issues dividing the two nations. The framework requires approval from President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who discussed trade in a 90-minute phone call last week, before moving forward. "Once the presidents approve it, we will then seek to implement it," Lutnick told reporters outside Lancaster House. Lutnick suggested that US measures responding to China's slowdown in rare earth exports, a significant […]

Elon Musk Finally Apologizes After Epic Trump Feud Goes Nuclear

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret over his recent criticisms of President Donald Trump following their highly publicized dispute. "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week," Musk wrote on his social media platform X early Wednesday. "They went too far." The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who recently stepped down from his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency, did not identify which specific criticisms prompted his apology. Musk's regret follows a series of aggressive attacks against Trump, including an unverified allegation that the administration withheld Jeffrey Epstein files to protect Trump from potential connections to the deceased financier and convicted sex offender. The conflict erupted after Musk, previously one of Trump's most influential supporters during his campaign and early presidency, publicly opposed Trump's comprehensive legislative package last week. Musk condemned what he called the […]
