Three teenagers have been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault on a 15-year-old boy in Sunderland on Friday evening.
Northumbria Police responded to a call from ambulance services at approximately 6:10 PM, reporting an injured teenage boy on Margaret Terrace in New Herrington. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered the 15-year-old victim had sustained serious injuries consistent with those caused by a bladed weapon.
The injured teenager was transported to the hospital for treatment. While his injuries are serious, they are not considered life-threatening, and he remains in stable condition. His family has been notified of the incident.
According to police reports, the assault occurred within the grounds of Herrington Country Park. The investigation is in its preliminary stages, with authorities working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The three suspects – two 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl – were initially arrested on suspicion of assault before facing additional charges of attempted murder. All three remain in police custody for questioning.
Chief Superintendent Nicola Walker of Northumbria Police addressed the incident, stating that extensive inquiries are underway to determine what transpired. She noted that three individuals are currently in custody, being questioned by investigators.
Police officers continue to maintain a presence in the area to provide community reassurance and conduct their investigation, which includes search activities within Herrington Country Park. Initial indications suggest that some of the individuals involved may have been acquainted with each other.
Given that Herrington Country Park is a popular location with high visitor numbers, authorities believe that numerous witnesses may have been present during the time of the incident. Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area or witnessed any part of the incident to come forward with information to assist their investigation.
