Five skiers have been discovered dead in the mountains near Zermatt, Switzerland’s renowned luxury resort destination.
The Canton Valais prosecutors’ office reported that emergency services received an alert about abandoned skis found at approximately 4,000 meters altitude in the Rimpfischhorn mountain area. This discovery prompted rescue operations in the region located in southwest Switzerland, close to the Italian border.
Following comprehensive air and ground search efforts, rescue teams located the five bodies near the Adlergletscher glacier. Air Zermatt, the local airline that provides search and rescue services, reported that three bodies were recovered from avalanche debris several hundred meters below the location where the skis were initially spotted. The remaining two bodies were found at a higher elevation on the mountain.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased skiers. An official investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
As part of the ongoing investigation, officials are examining the area’s weather conditions and avalanche activity. They are analyzing these factors to understand what may have contributed to the fatal incident.
The Rimpfischhorn mountain, standing at 4,199 meters (13,776 feet), is situated near the Swiss-Italian border and attracts backcountry skiing enthusiasts. The mountain’s challenging terrain and high altitude make it a popular destination for experienced skiers seeking adventure beyond traditional resort boundaries.
The discovery highlights the inherent risks associated with backcountry skiing in high-altitude alpine environments, where weather conditions can change rapidly and avalanche dangers present ongoing challenges for outdoor enthusiasts.
