Elon Musk Makes Surprise Capitol Hill Appearance

Elon Musk visited Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon, meeting with senators to discuss energy policy, artificial intelligence, and strategic competition with China.

The Tesla CEO and head of the Department of Government Efficiency arrived at a meeting room on the Senate side of the Capitol complex in what appeared to be an unexpected visit for most lawmakers and staff members. Musk has reduced his involvement in official White House activities recently, following his role in significant changes to federal operations during the early months of the current administration.

Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska confirmed that Musk participated in discussions covering artificial intelligence, energy matters, and broader strategic concerns.

“It was a really good discussion,” Sullivan stated. “He’s got incredible insights on the broader strategic competition and stuff. That’s what we were talking about.”

Sullivan indicated that the attendees were primarily members of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, also a Commerce Committee member, provided a similar account of the meeting.

Musk left the meeting without making statements to the press. Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz of Texas characterized the session as an opportunity for Republican committee members to pose questions, noting his practice of regularly convening experts to provide information to committee members.

High Court to Decide Fate of Controversial Wimbledon Expansion Plans

A legal challenge against the All England Club's ambitious expansion plans for Wimbledon will be heard at the High Court on Tuesday, marking a critical moment in a four-year dispute over the future of a historic London site. Save Wimbledon Park (SWP) is contesting the Greater London Authority's approval of proposals to nearly triple the tennis venue's size by constructing 39 new courts and an 8,000-seat stadium on the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club grounds. The development received planning permission last year from Jules Pipe, London's Deputy Mayor for Planning, who determined that the project's benefits would "clearly outweigh the harm." Debbie Jevans, chair of the All England Club, highlighted that the expansion would create 27 acres of "newly accessible parkland for the community" and enable the qualifying tournament to move from Roehampton to the main site. However, the campaign […]

Trump Announces Additional 10% Tariff on Countries Supporting BRICS Policies

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that nations aligning with the BRICS alliance policies opposing US interests will face an additional 10% tariff, with no exceptions to the policy. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform following criticism from BRICS members regarding his tariff policies and their proposals for International Monetary Fund reforms and currency valuation changes. The BRICS alliance, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in recent years to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The bloc represents more than half of the world's population and was designed to enhance member nations' international standing and challenge US and Western European influence. BRICS leaders convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this weekend to discuss reforms to global institutions and position the alliance as a diplomatic platform amid increasing trade […]

Forty-one people remain unaccounted for across the state, according to Governor Greg Abbott, though more may be missing. In Kerr County, residents began clearing mud and salvaging belongings from damaged properties while recounting their escapes from rapidly rising floodwaters that struck late Friday. Reagan Brown described how his parents, both in their 80s, escaped uphill as water flooded their Hunt home, then returned to rescue their trapped 92-year-old neighbor from her attic before taking shelter in a toolshed with other neighbors. Search efforts continue in challenging terrain populated with snakes, […]

Former Labour Leader Says Government Policies Overshadowed by Controversial Decisions

Former Labour leader Lord Neil Kinnock has stated that the party's policies are "barely being noticed" and have been "obscured" by disputes over welfare reforms and winter fuel payments. Lord Kinnock, who led the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992, spoke to Sky News as Sir Keir Starmer marked his first year as Prime Minister. He suggested that "a cloud hangs over the accomplishments of the Government" despite what he described as substantial achievements. The former leader acknowledged that Labour has "a series of really commendable and absolutely essential policies" but argued these are being overshadowed by controversial decisions. He also proposed implementing a wealth tax as a potential policy change that could gain public support. Sir Keir's anniversary week coincided with the Prime Minister abandoning several proposed welfare reforms following opposition from backbench MPs. When asked about the Government's […]

Trump Threatens New Russia Sanctions As Ukraine War Drags On

President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin over the ongoing Ukraine conflict and indicated he may impose additional sanctions on Russia. "We get a lot of b******t thrown at us by Putin," Trump stated during a White House cabinet meeting Tuesday. "He's very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless." Trump noted that Putin is "killing a lot of people," including both Russian soldiers and Ukrainian forces. When questioned about Senate-proposed legislation for further Russian sanctions, Trump responded: "I'm looking at it very strongly." However, Trump declined to elaborate on his plans regarding Putin, telling reporters: "I wouldn't be telling you. Don't we want to have a little surprise?" He then shifted the discussion to last month's US strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities. These remarks coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron's address to the British […]

Israel Strikes Deep Into Lebanon Killing Three Despite Ceasefire Agreement

An Israeli strike on a vehicle near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli has killed at least three people and injured 13 others, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry, marking another violation of the ceasefire between the two countries. The attack occurred Tuesday in the Ayrounieh area as Israel continues striking Lebanon despite Hezbollah's weakened state, the Lebanese army's limited capacity to respond, and the international community's inability to enforce the truce. The strike near Lebanon's northernmost major city, located more than 180km from the Israeli border, demonstrates Israel's readiness to conduct operations throughout the country beyond southern regions. The Israeli military stated it targeted a "key" figure from Hamas without providing identification. However, a Hamas source in Lebanon told Al Araby TV that no senior official from the group was killed in the strike. Lebanon's Annahar newspaper reported that initial […]

UK Threatens New Action Against Israel If Gaza Ceasefire Fails

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has criticized the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and indicated that the United Kingdom could take additional measures against Israel if a ceasefire agreement fails to materialize. During testimony before Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday, Lammy also condemned the new aid distribution system in Gaza operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group supported by the United States and Israel. "We've been very clear that we don't support the aid foundation that has been set up," Lammy stated. "It's not doing a good job. Too many people are close to starvation. Too many people have lost their lives. We have led globally on our condemnation the system that has been set up." Recent weeks have seen hundreds of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire while seeking GHF assistance. When asked by a legislator whether the […]

Putin Minister Found Dead Hours After Firing Sends Shockwaves Through Russia

Monday brought dramatic developments to Russia as President Vladimir Putin dismissed Transport Minister Roman Starovoit, only for the former minister to be found dead with a gunshot wound to the head that same afternoon. Starovoit's body was discovered in a park near Moscow alongside a pistol. Investigators concluded he had taken his own life, marking what the tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets called "an almost unique occurrence in Russian history." Such incidents are exceptionally rare in Russia's modern era. The last comparable case occurred over three decades ago in August 1991, when Soviet Interior Minister Boris Pugo shot himself following the failed communist coup. The Kremlin has provided limited comment on Starovoit's death. When asked about the incident, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the shock, stating "Normal people cannot but be shocked by this. Of course, this shocked us, too." He deferred […]

Woman Convicted Of Mushroom Murder After Deadly Family Lunch

An Australian woman has been convicted of murdering three family members by serving them a meal containing poisonous mushrooms. Erin Patterson was found guilty Monday on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder following a 10-week trial in Morwell, a regional town approximately 152km east of Melbourne. The 50-year-old displayed no visible reaction as the verdicts were delivered in court. Patterson's estranged in-laws, Donald and Gail Patterson, along with Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, died after consuming beef Wellingtons containing death cap mushrooms during a lunch on July 29, 2023. Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson was also poisoned but survived after a seven-week hospitalization. Patterson had entered not guilty pleas to all charges. Her defense team argued that she had accidentally served the contaminated food to her relatives in what they characterized as a "terrible accident." Prosecutors did not […]
