Five people were rescued after being caught in a backcountry avalanche north of Whistler, B.C., on Ipsoot Mountain near Pemberton on Monday. The avalanche, triggered by “commercial activity” involving Whistler Heli Skiing, resulted in four people being fully buried, two of whom were trapped for at least ten minutes, and one person being partially buried. Despite the severity of the situation, all five individuals survived and are in stable condition.
Const. Antoine Graebling of the Sea to Sky RCMP detachment confirmed that the group included several customers and an instructor from Whistler Heli Skiing. The initial rescue effort was launched by Whistler Heli Skiing employees and members of the Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol.
B.C. Emergency Health Services (B.C. EHS) was alerted to the incident around 1:30 p.m. and dispatched three ambulances to a Whistler helipad staging area. Paramedics provided on-site medical treatment, and three of the rescued people were subsequently transported to a hospital. The other two were assessed and treated at the scene but did not require further hospitalization.
Vail Resorts, the owner of Whistler Blackcomb since 2016, released a statement through Whistler Heli Skiing expressing gratitude to their partners and the Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol for their rapid response. The company confirmed that all members of the heli-skiing group were accounted for after the avalanche.
