A Canadian soldier has been fined and reprimanded for wearing medals he did not earn during a Remembrance Day ceremony in Alberta. Corporal René Duguay pleaded guilty to conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline after being seen wearing three unauthorized medals on his uniform.
A military judge determined that Duguay had not been awarded any medals during his nine years of service. The medals he wore included two for service in southwest Asia and one for service under exceptional circumstances.
Duguay’s actions were condemned by his unit, who described the negative impact on morale and discipline. The judge acknowledged that Duguay had faced personal challenges prior to the offense, but emphasized that these did not excuse his behavior.
Wearing unearned military medals, often referred to as “stolen valor,” is considered a serious offense that disrespects the sacrifices of those who have legitimately earned such honors. The judge emphasized the gravity of Duguay’s actions, particularly given that they occurred on Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to honoring veterans and fallen soldiers.
