A gastrointestinal illness outbreak affected 141 individuals aboard a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship during a recent voyage. The Navigator of the Seas experienced the outbreak during a week-long round-trip cruise from Los Angeles to Mexico that concluded on July 11.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 134 passengers out of 3,914 guests reported illness, accompanied by seven crew members. The affected individuals experienced primary symptoms including vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The CDC has classified the causative agent as unknown at this time.
In response to the outbreak, Royal Caribbean implemented enhanced disinfection protocols and cleaning measures. The cruise line also isolated affected passengers and crew members as part of their containment strategy, the CDC reported.
A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to passenger safety. “The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority,” the representative stated to USA TODAY. “To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.”
This incident represents one of 18 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships that have met CDC notification thresholds in 2025. The majority of these outbreaks have been attributed to norovirus. For comparison, there were 18 total outbreaks in 2024 and 14 in 2023.
The CDC addressed concerns about increasing outbreak numbers in an April statement to USA TODAY, noting that “the number of recent cruise ship outbreaks has been higher than in years before the pandemic, we do not yet know if this represents a new trend.”
The agency provided additional context about current outbreak patterns: “However, CDC data show a newly dominant strain is currently associated with reported norovirus outbreaks on land. Ships typically follow the pattern of land-based outbreaks, which are higher this norovirus season.”
Despite the public perception of an association between gastrointestinal illness and cruise ships, cruise-related outbreaks account for only 1% of all reported outbreaks, according to CDC data.
